Atlas of Disappearance

Synopsis

Atlas of Disappearance follows three relatives of the disappeared as they undertake a long and complex journey to recover the remains of their loved ones, confronting the bureaucratic, legal, and social obstacles that persist decades after the Spanish Civil War. Between 1959 and 1981, the Franco regime quietly oversaw the exhumation and transfer of more than 33,000 bodies from over 500 mass graves across Spain to El Valle de los Caídos, the monumental mausoleum built to glorify fascist victory. Drawing on director Manuel Correa’s research with Forensic Architecture, the film uses digital maps, citizen archives, and forensic technologies to reconstruct what oblivion sought to erase and reveal how families have safeguarded fragile traces of the disappeared.
